GSmartControl is a graphical user interface for smartctl, a tool for survey and monitoring SMART data (technology assessment hard drive built-in hardware self-test) on modern hard disks. Allows you to monitor the SMART data to determine its health, as well as running lots of tests.
S.M.A.R.T. monitors the main characteristics of the drive, each of which is assessed. Characteristics can be divided into two groups:
– parameters reflecting the natural aging of the hard disk (the number of revolutions of the spindle, the number of movements of heads, the number of cycles on-off);
– current parameters of the drive (height of heads above the disk surface, the number of reallocated sectors, seek time and number of errors.
Data is stored in hexadecimal format, called “raw values” and then converted to value – the value that symbolizes the reliability with respect to a reference value. Value is usually in the range from 0 to 100 (some attributes have values from 0 to 200 and 0 to 253).
A high score indicates the absence of changes in this parameter, or slow its deterioration. Low – about a possible failure in the near future.
A value less than the minimum at which the manufacturer guarantees trouble-free operation of the drive means the output of node failure.
Technology S.M.A.R.T. allows:
-monitoring of state parameters;
-the surface scan;
-the surface scan with the replacement of bad sectors on normal.
-It should be noted that the technology S.M.A.R.T. allows to predict the failure of the device due to mechanical faults, which is about 60% of the causes of hard drive crash. To predict the consequences of a power surge or mechanical shock S.M.A.R.T. is not capable.
